Xbox Live Vision Camera Review

I just remembered that I never posted about this. Back on August 23, 2006 my local Toys R Us received a shipment of Xbox Live Cameras. I had called the previous 2 days to see if they had any after reading that another location broke the street date. Then on the 23rd the woman said, "Hold on we just got a shipment in and let me see if we have any." She came back and said, "I have this Xbox Live Vision camera thing, is that it?" So I hung up and rushed to Toys R Us on my way to work and bought two of them. As she rung them up I looked and noticed they only had three left (so they only received five).

Since I had to work, I couldn't rush home right away and plug in the camera. While I was at work I told a friend that Toys R Us had them and he went there about 2 hours after I did to try and get one. When he got there the same woman acted like she didn't know what he was talking about and then asked her manager if they had any. After some talking, they told him they didn't have any. He looked at the shelf where I told him they were located, but said there weren't any there. So either they sold the other three they had or they took them off the shelf because they weren't supposed to sell them. Well, since I bought two I sold one to him and we thoroughly tried them out.

First off, the camera was $39.99 and came with a free Uno code and one month of Xbox Live Gold (I just added the free month to my existing 12 month subscription). The dashboard already supports the camera from an update released a while back. Uno is currently the only game to support the camera in game, which I am sure that will change soon since the actual Camera release date is September 19th. In Uno, you have a few options to choose from, but are a pain to get to (I will explain in a bit). While in game, instead of displaying your gamer picture you can have your camera on to show everyone in the room what you are doing, wearing and how ugly you are. You also have zoom options to get a closer look at that pretty face if your camera is pretty far away. Being able to adjust the zoom and turning off the camera during the game is nice, but you have to be in the middle of playing a game to change the settings. That can be a real pain because each persons turn only takes a few seconds, so trying to hit start and mess with the options leaves minimal time. This could make yours fellow Uno players mad.

You can also have a private one on one Vision chat with someone on your friend list (only one of you needs a camera, but that can be boring). In Vision chat, the camera quality looks pretty nice, but can get pixilated at times. In chat there are two windows, one for your camera and one for your friend. They are pretty big in size and are the picture looks pretty nice. You have a few options like zoom and picture overlay. The overlay is one of my favorite features, which includes: black & white, blurry (drunk goggles), two Scanner Darkly type overlays (one yellow and one green), and some others. While in Vision chat, if you pull one of the triggers on your controller it will make your friends controller vibrate.

Last, but not least, custom gamer pictures. You can finally create your own gamer picture with the camera. Take a picture of you doing something stupid, your cat, a poster or anything you can think of. The options are limitless, which is the best part. Once you take a picture, you have dozens of overlays to make your picture more "fun". My favorite is the double vision one. BUT, I must say there is a down side to the gamer picture. Only people on your friends list will be able to see your gamer picture taken by the Vision Camera.

Well, I hope you got enough info to tide you over till you can get your hands on one. If anyone wants to check it out, you can see if I'm signed on. Just send an invite over to TGZRyo. Now for some brief cons and pros!
