Shadow the Hedgehog

As for 3d sonic games, they haven’t pushed the Sonic theme to the fullest. Be it Fishing missions, Treasure Hunts, or the lack of multi-paths, people have always had something to complain about with Sonic Adventure 1 & 2. Shadow tries to rectify this to a degree, but doesn’t completely succeed. While we are graced with another 3D Sonic game that doesn’t involve fishing for “Froggy”, the presence of find every something or other is evident on nearly every stage. While these missions are optional and not necessary for playing, they are needed to get all 10 endings and are thus required for the final cop-out boss fight. If you beat Sonic Adventure 1 or 2, then you know what I’m talking about. As for the 10 endings, they are somewhat entertaining but have nothing to do with the real ending and real story.

Gameplay: Aside from some camera issues and homing-jump errors, the game play is pretty good. The use of guns and vehicles is interesting and allows more of a choice in stage strategy, while the general on foot running still allows some sense of speed. Not always as fast as in Sonic Adventure 2, but still enough for some massive jetting. Surprisingly, the guns fit well in the game, though the alien weapons look like tumors. Now if only they would put more bosses in this game.

Graphics and Sound: Oddly enough, the voices seem pretty well done. The lip-synching is mostly exact with the voices as well. The cut scenes were the best I’ve seen for a Sonic game so far, too bad all of the story elements and endings are so jumbled that one can only trust the “Last Story” ending. The sound effects were typical for a Sonic Adventure game and the music was in the tradition of Sonic Adventure 2. So if you like Soft Hair Metal, go buy the soundtrack.

In the end, Shadow the Hedgehog is an okay game. Not a great game or an innovative one, but one worth at least renting. If you are a Sonic fan, you might as well buy this one and complete all 300+ story paths. You’ll still get the same 10 fake endings, but its something to do until the next sonic game comes out for the consoles.

Pros: Choose your own mission per stage is interesting for the story path, Great cut scenes, no fishing, room full of Chao to attack, lots of action and speed.

Cons: Treasure hunting missions, bogus endings that only confuse the player, Alien weapons look too much like cancer, camera sometimes cumbersome, homing attack needs adjusted further, too few bosses that are often reused again and again.

Massive update

Sorry that I'm late with the short holiday comic. To make up for it I have two updates for the site. One is a review for Shadow the Hedgehog for the Game Cube. The other is a short con report for the Mid-Ohio-Con. Its not much, but hopefully the next comic will be online in time.

Tanks a lot

New Comic. I figured with the boom of the new DS Mario Kart game and my car getting out of the shop a special comic was in order. Sorry it was late, but at least there will be a new review in a few days. I just got the new Shadow game, and I'm actually surprised.

Mario Kart DS

mkds.jpg

I picked up Mario Kart for the Nintendo DS at EB today. I got there just in time, the guy told me they just got it about 20 minutes ago and I was the first person to purchase one. I couldn't ask for better timing (other than receiving it early). Anyways, the game is freaking awesome. I knew the game would include tracks from previous versions of the game, but I didn't know it had the ones that I liked the most (Moo Moo Farm from N64, original Mario Circuit from SNES, etc.)

I really haven't played single player all that much, I've been playing multiplayer on the 'Nintendo WFC'. The setup for the wireless online is pretty painless, it did take me a few minutes because the server was "Experiencing Intermittent Problems," but that is pretty understandable since the game doesn't "officially" hit most stores until tomorrow, Wednesday 11/16/05, and they are still ironing things out. When entering multiplayer you select if you want to play people from your region, worldwide, rivals and friends. I usually play worldwide or rivals.

I will have a more in-depth review soon about the game in a few days. But as far as you're concerned, if you own a DS, you MUST buy this game.

EDIT: Oh, you should check out NintendoWifi.com, from there you can link your Nintendo.com account to your DS and it lets you see how many races you have won and how you compare to others. Neat stuff. Definitely check it out.

Blasta Masta

Comic's up. With all of the error fixing I only had time to make this quick joke. Dive's bit is based off of the plotline for Blaster Master, a NES game I grew up with as a kid. They made a Playstation sequel some time ago, but it failed to capture the same magic.

Time to pay up

I've talked about The Mafia Boss in most of my recent posts, but we have part 1 in the 3 strip series of the "TGZ Mafia Boss". In the game you are given about 1,500 turns to hire thugs, hitmen, whores, etc. You can also use those turns to produce drugs, money and alcohol. But when I play, I like to hire thugs and then use those thugs to break some legs and collect me some loan payments.

Hopefully we will be able to bring part 2 in the coming week. Stay tuned.

Oh, and I added separate links to the news and comic archives on the left panel for easier browsing. Aren't I handy? No? Screw you then.

Sticks & Stones!!

So I'm a little late on posting the last installment for "Sticks and Stones: An MMORPG story." I don't really have an excuse besides that I forgot. Sorry... Anyways, I had to pretty it up a little due to my poor excuse for handwriting on the original. So now that it is complete, I heard a rumor there may be an expansion pack. But that is just a rumor, so we will treat it as so.

In other news, necrojon and I talked briefly about The Mafia Boss and I really think you should give it a try. After playing a few turns, I got an idea for a comic and I checked to see if necrojon would like to draw it out for me. He was happy to do it, so I forwarded him the dialog. It will be about 3 strips and hopefully I will be posting the first one sometime tomorrow.

Not the TV Show

New Comic. Based on Lost in Blue for the DS and the old Gameboy game Survival Kids.
